painting monarch butterflies as a symbol of change and healing

Although many of us are getting ready to go back to school (nooooo!) it’s still summertime here in California… which is why it been so magical (and mysterious) to see so many monarch butterflies lately as they usually migrate in the fall. Lately, they’ve been fluttering all around us, even crossing our path while we’re out for beach walks.

Whenever I notice animal allies (or insects, in this case) showing up like this, I listen. They always have a message. Monarchs are a powerful symbol of transformation and trusting the journey, and I can’t help but wonder if they’re reminding us to embrace change with grace right now. (I don’t know ‘bout you, but we’ve been dealing with a whole lotta changes and big emotions in this household).

My daughter and I painted monarchs onto the next layer of my canvas. I always invite her to join me, not to “teach” her art, but to share the experience of creating and freely expressing our inner (and outer) worlds. And most importantly, remind her how much we can learn from the wisdom of Mother Nature.

Painting together is about so much more than the finished piece. It’s about slowing down, blending swirly colors, and gently noticing your feelings and intuitive insights come alive on the canvas. The frequency, the soul of it, the way it mirrors life…the layers, the stories, the lessons, imperfections, and all.

Just like the monarchs, we can trust the winds to carry us exactly where we need to be…and you can do this too. Look for your own signs. Notice the animals, the colors, the patterns that keep showing up for you. They’re always speaking. We just have to be willing to listen.

If you’re barely hanging on as we transition into this next season, remember to pause, look up, and watch for them beautiful monarchs ✨xo-dez
