I painted this piece as a form of creative meditation while I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter. Each brushstroke was a form of meditation, envisioning a peaceful home birth.
Little did I know, that soon after finishing the painting, I would unexpectedly welcome my daughter into the world six weeks ahead of schedule. It was a humbling reminder that life’s plans can swiftly change, catching us by surprise.
So, there I was, unexpectedly thrust into the throes of motherhood six weeks earlier than expected.
No serene home birth.
No beautifully adorned nursery awaiting us.
Instead, it was me, my tiny, precious 3lb-13oz preemie baby, and my devoted husband navigating through the challenges of NICU life, all of us in survival mode.
This painting is called, “Strength”.
It’s the second of a series of elephant paintings I created during a collaboration with other artists. Together we created a set of 100 ‘Mother Love’ postcards, symbolizing the matriarchal power and spirit of elephant societies.
I share this story, because if you ask any artist, there is (almost) always a story that inspired that piece of work. Whether it’s a song, a poem, choreography, a play, a film, even jewelry. Something transpired from the ethers, and most likely the creation of said artwork served as a form of catharsis for that artist, making it even more meaningful for the viewer or those that get to experience it💫.
This original piece will be exhibited at the Ojai Art Center through the month of May (May 4th-May 29th) along with other members of the Buenaventura Art Association.
If you’re interested in this original piece, please contact me or visit the Ojai Art Center to view it in person.
