Creative Rituals TV: 'Time is on My Side' Art Journalling Tutorial - Mixed Media for Beginners

mixed media art journaling tutorial by creativity coach and artist desiree east

Hello Creative Soul,

Happy New Moon blessings. The new moon is the best time to ask yourself what you’d like to invite MORE of into your life. It is an intention to plant the seeds and grow, grow, grow…

I wanted to share my art journaling process with you, a spread that was inspired by the phases of the moon. This process is actually a perfect example of what was supposed to be a ‘left-brained’ planning activity that morphed into a beautiful creative journey, which at the end, revealed the words that I needed to hear at that moment.

Back story: I used to be an extremely good planner…TOTALLY on top of things, birthdays were never missed, I was always punctual to appointments and events, I had vacations planned months in advanced, my work flow was perfectly scheduled to make deadlines, and I even had time regularly scheduled in for self-care.

That all got thrown out the window post-baby (and we’re coming up to 4 years…whaaaat)…and I’m finally getting my (planning) act together, which is why you’re seeing more of me lately!! YAY, for planning! And that also means that I get to start nerding-out on planners again (are you with me?).

So there I was, planning away in my beautiful planner…I like to break the year into quarter, then break the quarter into months, then weeks, and so on…and I suddenly found myself extremely

O V E R W H E L M E D with ALL of the things.

Hello, left brain. So nice to see you today!

So here’s the thing: I got so wrapped up in the planning, which I actually love. There truly is a creative process to planning that I really love and enjoy. BUT, where I got overwhelmed was when I had all the things I wanted to do staring at me and my lizard brain saying, “Girl, you don’t have time to do all of those things….pfffttttt” .

At that very moment, I knew that I wasn’t in the right mindset for planning in an inspiring way anymore, and so I put the planner aside and grabbed my art journal.

Hello, right brain. Let’s reconnect to HEART.

Watch the video to see my creative process (and get some quick art journaling tips).

I started with 12 circles, each representing the months of the year. They morphed from circles, to moons, then finally to clocks, representing time…and a beautiful message from my creative intuition, the thing that I needed to hear right then and there, at that moment.

After having a chance to play creatively again, I went back into planning mode with a fresh outlook and an inspired heart!!

Are you new to art journaling or do you keep a regular art journal? I’d love to see your work…if you’re new to art journaling, how can I inspire you? What would you like to learn? Let me know in the comments below.
